Aung San Suu Kyi: Embodying the People's Dream
She stands, tiny and fragile behind the iron fence, then graciously she accepts the gift of a flower and puts it in her hair.
The people of Burma are cursed to have such terrible governance, but blessed with such a leader. Aung San Suu Kyi is indomitable, indefatigable, brave, intelligent, beautiful. And one day, she may just lead the long-suffering people of her coutnry to freedom.
I don't like the over-use of the word icon, but I think in the case of Aung San Suu Kyi, it's justified. In her person, she represents the Burmese people's struggle for democracy. When she speaks, she speaks for the people. She is their dream of freedom and it shows in all the charts.
In astrology we have something called the rule of three, which means you have to see an idea in a chart three times before you can be sure it's really telling a story.
Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma's dissident leader in waiting was born with the Moon conjunct Neptune.
Burma itself, born 4 Jan, 1948 - Moon conjunct Neptune.
Yesterday, Aung San was released from house arrest - Moon conjunct Neptune.
What does this mean? The Moon represents our emotions, our most instinctive self, our inner child. In the chart of a country, the Moon represents the people. Neptune is the planet of mysticism, sacrifice and dreams. Next to the Moon it shows Aung San Suu Kyi must have an instinctively spiritual nature, connecting easily with the numinous. Yoga and meditation have helped her through her years under arrest. But Neptune next to the Moon also shows someone for whom no sacrifice is too much.
In the Burmese chart this combinatiuon shows us a people sustained by a deep spiritual tradition. Remember the demonstrating monks in 2007. And also that they connect instinctively with the Lady.
The Lady was two and a half when her country was born and her freedom planet, Uranus was exactly opposite the country's Jupiter, planet of growth and optimism. It also sits on the Descendant - the angle of opposition. Burma's recent history is locked into the cycle of Jupiter-Uranus oppositions and conjunctions.
Burma became independent when Jupiter opposed Uranus from Sagittarius; the first coup d'etat in 1962 happened with the opposition across Leo-Aquarius; and now the two planets are conjoined in the Neptune's own sign, Pisces.
The synastry between Aung San Suu Kyi and her country is intense. Just briefly, her Ceres (the mother asteroid) conjuncts the Burmese Moon and opposes its Ceres; her Jupiter (the teacher) conjuncts Burma's Midheaven (leadership); her Venus (exalted in Taurus) trines the Burmese Sun and squares its own freedom-loving Venus in Aquarius. Those are just a few of the joint aspects. No wonder the junta don't kow what to do with her.
Yesterday, the day she was freed, the Moon conjuncted that Burmese Venus again, Ceres is applying to the Burmese Sun - and very potently the North Node (the point of destiny) conjoined Pluto (planet of transformation).
I listened to the pundits very gloomy assessment of Burma's chances for change. I hope they are wrong and if anyone can change Burma, she can.
